New system predicts end-of-season corn yield more accurately than USDA
As lead author, Dr. Peng developed a corn-yield forecasting system that combines NOAA seasonal climate predictions with satellite imagery, run on the Blue Waters supercomputer. The approach beat the USDA’s WASDE estimates well before harvest — June predictions were off by 12.75 bushels per acre, compared to 17.66 for WASDE. Read more at phys.org.
