New grant to reveal tillage effects on crop yield, farmland sustainability

Dr. Peng is lead investigator on a USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture grant expanding his team’s work on detecting soil tillage practices from satellite, airborne, and ground-based data. The three-year project, with co-PI Kaiyu Guan and collaborators at the University of Minnesota, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, and University of Illinois Extension, will assess how different tillage methods affect corn and soybean yields, greenhouse gas emissions, nitrogen loss, and soil carbon across Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Minnesota.
